ALREADY REGISTERED BUT WANT TO SWITCH RACES? (posted 7/7/10)
Not a problem, but only if the race you want to switch to is not already sold out. In addition to a $10 fee to switch races ($25 after November 1), you will be charged the difference in entry fees in effect at the time of your request if upgrading (i.e., half marathon to marathon). If downgrading, (marathon to half marathon or 5K, for example), you will be charged the fee and will not receive a refund for the difference in registration fees.
To switch races, e-mail an official request to marathon@stjude.org. You must include the following information:
- name of the race you originally registered for (confirmation number helpful, but not required)
- name of the race to which you want to switch
- statement giving us permission to charge the fee (and upgrade charge if applicable) to the same credit card you used when originally registering
The change in races will be promptly processed, and you will received an updated confirmation by e-mail within 48 hours.
Please note:
- requests to switch races will not be considered after November 19
- a participant who completes a race other than the one for which he/she is registered will not be scored (i.e., not be listed as a finisher with an official time).
WE’RE GOING “GREEN” (posted 4/28/10)
In an effort to eliminate waste and become more eco-friendly, the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend took a number of strides in 2009 to become more “green.”
For starters, our registration system became paperless in 2009 —only online entries were accepted. We upgraded our goodie bags from a plastic drawstring to a non-woven, backpack-style bag made of recycled material which is also a reusable bag. We created a race guide that included all race information into one booklet which was printed on recycled paper. The guide was distributed to participants in advance via e-mail and we began using a new timing mechanism that allowed us to consume fewer pre-packaging supplies. The race numbers were recyclable, as were the heat sheets, which are made from FDA food-grade LDPE-4 resin. We had recycle stations set up for recycling the heat sheets at the finish line. We offered recycle containers throughout the park including the infield for plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard and heat sheets.
Due to all of these efforts, we recycled .44 total tons of paper and .69 total tons of plastic, and we helped save the equivalent of:
- seven trees
- 167 gallons of oil
- 3,080 gallons of water
- 5,744 kilowatt hours of energy
- 4.08 cubic yards of landfill space
- 68 BTUs of energy
In 2010, we will continue these plans and look for additional “going green” opportunities.
NO RACE DAY PACKET PICKUP (posted 4/28/10)
Runners will no longer be able to obtain their race number and packet on race day (Saturday, December 4). Like most races of our size and larger, we have unfortunately outgrown our ability to offer this service. This applies to all races.
Participants will need to make their travel arrangements so that they are able to obtain their race packets at the Expo on the Thursday or Friday prior to race day (December 2 - 3). In order to accommodate late arrivers, the closing hour on Friday night has been extended from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
SPECIAL DOWNTOWN HOTEL RATES ANNOUNCED (posted 4/28/10)
Discounted rates at 13 downtown hotels are now listed in the Lodging section of the Web site. These hotels are the most convenient to both the race start and finish lines as well as many restaurants and Beale Street, Memphis’ world-famous entertainment district. Most downtown hotels require a two-night minimum stay. Hurry, these hotels will sell out early.
Rates for suburban hotels should be posted to the Web site by late summer.
